L.E.A.D. Program Page
Welcome to the L.E.A.D. program page….
L.E.A.D. stands for Law Enforcement Adoptable Drafts, this page is dedicated to helping the Sheriffs Departments who wish to use drafts as part of their mounted program to be able to have them donated to their agency. As part of our regular rescue efforts we always strive to work with the law enforcement agencies who have contacted us seeking horses for mounts. We have decided to expand our efforts to a separate program specifically designed to address the special requests that are received from law enforcement. We will be going to auctions and bidding on draft horses who are in danger of going to slaughter, we will bring them back to the farm where they will go through a 30 day quarantine process, during which time they will receive all necessary veterinary care, carrier care, dental care, all vaccines, and start ground training to get them ready for saddle work. Upon completion of the quarantine process the horses will begin evaluation under saddle, temperament evaluations, and training to help improve self confidence. As the horses progress they will be made available for agencies to come out and meet them, evaluate them and see if they could be a good match for their program. All of our L.E.A.D. program horses will be made available to law enforcement agencies at no charge. We do ask that when a horse has finished his/her service with one of the law enforcement agencies we are notified. If someone from the mounted unit would like to adopt the horse the proper transfer can be made (again there is no charge just paperwork to ensure that horses records are complete as we make a lifelong commitment to each horse), if the horse is not adopted by one of the mounted team or the agency then the horse should return to Florida Draft Horse Rescue for adoption to ensure that the horse has a good forever home.
We are currently looking for black Percheron geldings at least 17hh at auction who are no older then 12yrs, if your agency has different requirements please let us know so we may be able to select horses who will fit the broadest audience of programs. Once a horse is ready their photo will be posted on the ‘Available L.E.A.D. horses” page and will be made available to law enforcement agencies only. If your agency is interested in a horse listed on this page please contact us directly so we may make the proper arrangements for you to come out and evaluate the horse.
Any law enforcement agency who is interested in adopting one of our L.E.A.D. Horses please contact us directly at fldrafthorserescue@yahoo.com we will need a letter from the agency that is requesting the adoption. Horses can only be donated to agencies and not to individuals as we need to ensure that the horses are going to sworn law enforcement officers who are on a paid position with a mounted unit. We have recieved numberous requests for horses to be donated to volunteer possee memebers and the like and unfortunately we are not able to accomidate those requests however, our normal adoption rates are very reasonable.
